Concept Art

Illustrative Work
First Concepts
Initially, I will draw the basic interpretation of the concept at hand, not yet using references or complex posing. The initial sketches are done to feel out the design, understand the basic construction of what I will be drawing going forward. They also serve to inform me about what research I will need to do going forward to find success in the design I'm creating.Creative writing
Now that I have the basics, it's time to make the character work as part of the world surrounding it. This particular character lives in a light fantasy world with sci-fi elements. For my next steps I'm looking for how robes are traditionally constructed, how these clothes are held on the body, as well as any other details I'm interested in adding. At this stage, I am looking to change my focus from basic to realistic, and part of this requires a bit of creative writing. Imagine the initial prompt is a description of the creature, and as the artist, you are an average person in this world/environment. To use the character here as an example, holding potions on his belt-loop is impractical, so it's been changed to a full bag. Small details like this add up; making characters who have to contend with the world they live in grounds them, and makes them fit.Reference refinement
Refining a reference for concept art involves clarifying the visual direction by enhancing details, adjusting proportions, and solidifying the design language to better communicate the intended look and feel of the final concept. At this stage, rendering materials becomes particularly important, as it helps convey the surface qualities—such as metal, fabric, or skin. This not only aids in aligning the vision across the production team but also provides a stronger foundation for 3D modeling, texturing, or further illustration work.Illustrative work
An illustrative piece may communicate further information about the character such as narrative importance, personality, and mood, often emphasizing storytelling elements that pure design sheets might not capture. Through lighting, composition, and gesture, illustration adds emotional depth and clarity, making the concept more engaging and easier to interpret by adding additional context.
